MEDRAUT KNEW HE NEEDED to disguise his feelings when he relayed the latest news to Morgause. It was going to be difficult, however. She thought she was so smart. That she would succeed where he and his brothers had so far failed. This was her first lesson in humility, and he was going to enjoy it. Even if he was unable to show it.

He stepped into the living room of her penthouse apartment.

Morgause looked up from the fashion magazine she held. “What is it?” she asked in a bored tone.

“Roane Pendragon has taken possession of his sword.”

“What?” Morgause screeched like an angry bird. She leaped to her feet, her hands fisted at her sides.

“Cait retrieved it and handed it over immediately, not less than three hours ago. Your personnel just returned with the news.”

“I don’t believe you. Send them in. At once. I want to hear their report in person.”

Medraut had anticipated her response after he’d first heard the news from his brother Maelgwyn, who had gone to watch her henchmen work. Going to her front door, he opened it and stood back. Four of his men entered, two each holding one of hers struggling between them. “In there.” He pointed to the living room.

They dragged the two men ahead of him.

Morgause faced them all, her eyes darting between the two men she had sent to follow Cait. Her nostrils flared, and her hands were clenched so tightly, Medraut was sure her nails were cutting into her palms. Her lids narrowed over a fiery gaze as a nerve next to her left eye twitched.

Medraut couldn’t look away. The train was headed full throttle toward the car stuck on the tracks. There was nothing to be done except watch the events play out. In her current mood, he certainly didn’t want to draw attention to himself.

“You were supposed to inform me when the Keeper left to retrieve the weapon. You. Were. Supposed. To. Tell. Me!” Morgause screamed the last. “You failed me. I do not tolerate failure.”

Two daggers materialized in the air in front of her shoulders. Morgause slowly raised her hands, drawing out the suspense for the two men. Her hands flapped forward in a flash. The daggers rocketed to embed in the chests of the two prisoners with dull thuds.

Morgause snapped her fingers. The corpses disappeared. She sent them to her palace in Tìr-dhàimh to be disposed of by her people there.

She turned her gaze to Medraut, her bosom heaving. Rage rolled off her in palpable waves. She pointed at him. “You remain here. Discover who the next Sword Maiden is and get her under your control. I am going to Tìr-dhàimh and try to stop Roane from reaching the prison.”

“As you wish,” Medraut readily agreed. He kept his thoughts on the success of her latest plan to himself. At least she would be in the other realm when her plan failed.
